I was first introduced to Playa G after interviewing the Memphis/College Park veteran and legend T-Rock. T-Rock shared with me some of his inspirations and Playa G happened to be the only one who I wasn't familiar with previously. Playa G's first CD, Pimp Sh*t is a very rare and out of print remnant of that old school Memphis sound. He is perhaps the utter encapsulation of Memphis in hits heyday, back when DJ Paul and Juicy J were just local cats making underground tapes (editor's note: "Pimp Shit" was released in 1996, Paul and Juice were well entrenched in the rap scene by this time). Some of you may have heard his voice grace the Kingpin Skinny Pimp, "Midnight Hoes" track on the King of Da Playaz Ball cd. Playa G interweaves his music with that G-Funk style popularized by the west coast in the Death Row era. At any rate Playa G deserves to be immortalized in the annals of Memphis gangsta/pimp rap history. And ode to Playa G.
